Ellie Kidder "Ellie Sherman"

Meet Ellie Kidder (aka Ellie Sherman). Ellie was born hearing impaired but was not discovered until she was 3 years old. By that time, she felt vibration from floor and knew someone is behind her and learned to read lips naturally.
One day, her mother told her to close the door since it was cold out. She did not respond while playing with her older sister. She called out a couple of times and this confirmed what she had suspected all along. Later, a visit to audiologist confirmed that she indeed, was profoundly hearing impaired.
So she adopted oralism approach which was popular during 1950’s, by not allowing her to read lips but to rely on what is left of her hearing which just barely existed. Ellie didn’t learn American Sign Language until she was 16 at high school for the Deaf on world’s only liberal art university for the Deaf. She was born as a gifted child. One day as a three year old child, she ran through the door to outside at front yard as soon as thunderstorm came to pass. Suddenly, she couched down on the sidewalk, looking at the puddle. For an hour she splashed it with her hand and carefully observed patterns of all kinds spreading across. She held her hand up, blocked the sunshine. It created a shadow. She blew water surface and saw how it will respond. To this day, she still continues to analyze water surface at lakes. At all this time, her mother observed and knew it would be her destiny for future.
She did my first portrait at 7 years old, it was her classmate and his name was Walter and remembers it vividly like yesterday. As a teenager, she asked her mother for her Christmas wish which was anatomical books and still collect it to this day and still studying. Same goes with horses. In high school, in art classes, instructors examined her skill and found none of their textbooks matched her skill level. Instead, she studied on university level for sculpture. In the last few years, despite doing caricatures at various festivals, private parties, city events and so forth, she decided to take it up to the next level. Formal caricature. And to her delightful surprise, discovered it is far more meaningful to have a formal caricature done than I would with a formal, photorealism type of portrait, either in oil paint, watercolor, colored pencils or pencils. Formal caricatures spark deep discussion among viewers into depth of honesty of a subject, of which she does not normally see with a straight, formal portrait. Her deepest passion of all, human head sculpture. She holds it near and dear to her heart but not quite so accessible due to prohibitive cost of materials and art studio space, so she rarely could work on this.
Ellie also does ceramic art, usually imprinted clay surface with actual leaves found outside clay studio and turn it into functional wares. She hopes if she were to be blessed, to return and study anatomy of human head. Please tune in on September 21, on World Peace Day to get to know Ellie live and see her work. Thank you Ellie for inspiring us with your story.
